Foolish or Brave?

In this current society in which we live, there is much confusion over the meaning of the word "bravery". What is bravery? Does it require the total absence of fear? I, for one, do not believe so. Let me offer this humble statement on the matter, penned by yours truly:
A man that fears no danger is not brave, but foolish. Bravery means not the absence of fear, but the will and ability to do the right thing in spite of fear.

My Brother's Ballgame

The game is on; top of the third. The East Petersburg Indians are in the field. The pitcher winds up and throws one right down the middle. The batter swings...and hits the ball into leftfield! The fielder keeps his eye on the ball...he holds out his glove and catches the ball...then drops it! The runner makes it safely to second.

That was the scene last evening as the East Pete Indians played another exciting baseball game. Why does it matter? My brother Shad plays on that team; that’s why it matters!

Later in the game, when East Pete was up to bat, Shad made a very nice hit and got a double. However, the runner which had been on second tried to make it all the way home, but the fielder threw the ball to the catcher in time to get him out. In the fifth inning, one batter hit a fly ball to centerfield, but Shad was right there, and he caught the ball with no trouble at all! Later, Shad hit a single, but because of the other team’s fumbles, he advanced all the way to third, and two runners made it home!

In the sixth and final inning, the opposing team loaded the bases. Shad was playing shortstop, but the coach brought him in as replacement pitcher to get them out of the tough situation. Shad walked one guy, but struck two others out (not unusual with Shad).

By the way, East Pete lost the game, but still played hard and had a lot of fun. Good game guys!

"Why Is There Death and Suffering?"

This question has plagued society for many generations. Unfortunately, Christians by and large have not adequately answered this question. The question seems like it would have a complex answer, but it doesn't. In fact, the answer can be found in the first few chapters of the Bible.

The answer is this: God created a perfect world, with no death, no disease, no pain, and no suffering. Then Adam, the first human, disobeyed God, which brought a curse upon the world. That curse included death, pain, and suffering.

When God finished His Creation and said it was very good, was the world filled with death and suffering? No! God did not call death "very good".

What About Carnivorous Animals?
Genesis 1:29-31 says, "...Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein [there is] life, [I have given] every green herb for meat: and it was so. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, [it was] very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day." -KJV

That passage of Scripture puts it very plainly-humans and animals were vegetarian in the beginning! (Note: In Genesis 9:3, after the Great Flood, God did make it permissible for humans to eat meat.)

If you looked at the Bible alone, not bringing any human ideas to it, you would never get the idea that there was death, disease, pain, and suffering, for millions of years before Adam.

Why is there death now? In Genesis 2:16-17, God told Adam not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve did not obey that simple command; they disobeyed God (that is, "sin").

The Consequences of Sin
The Bible teaches that death and suffering are consequences of sin. Romans 5:12,13 says, "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law." -KJV

There is the answer! God created a perfect world, but Adam's sin messed everything up. God is not to blame for death and suffering; we are to blame. Adam's sin brought death and suffering into the world, and since Adam was the head of the human race, every human has inherited his sin nature.

There is Hope!
Through Jesus Christ, we are saved from sin. God sent his Son (Jesus) to die for us and be raised from the dead which paid for our sins and gave us eternal life. God is truly a God of love!

A Necessary Part of Filmmaking

I am now in the process of preparing the budget for my upcoming movie, Good Sam. It is no easy process! I must search through the entire script to determine what expenses I will have during production (sets, props, etc.).

Worse than that is the realization that I must raise the money once the budget is complete! It's one thing to write on paper that I need a certain amount of money; it's quite another to raise that money!

Well, it's all a necessary part of the filmmaking process; I just have to get used to it. I'll be sure to keep everyone updated on my progress!

Movie Script Update

Some of my readers know that I have been in the process of writing the script for a movie I want to produce. I have recently completed the sixth draft for the script and now I’m sending it to a few filmmaker colleagues for their input and suggestions.

I have made many changes to the script during the writing of the first six drafts, and I suppose I will make many more changes in the next six drafts or so. One place that had numerous rewrites was the scene where a major character converts to Christianity.

Originally, I wrote it the traditional way (“You must pray a prayer of Salvation. Now repeat after me...”). However, I have since changed it for various reasons. One reason is that I can find no place in Scripture that demands a sinner must pray a prayer to be saved! Yes, praying to God is important and vital to the Christian life, but it is not necessary to pray a prayer of Salvation.

Romans chapter 10, verses 9 and 10 say, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” -KJV

Only these two things are necessary for a soul to be saved from sin: confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead. No other ceremonial procedures or rituals are required! (Of course, much is required after Salvation; such as baptism for example.) Now make note that I am NOT saying that people who pray a prayer of Salvation are not saved, but only that a prayer of Salvation is not required (by God).

So anyway, I decided to make the script more biblically correct rather than religiously correct. I hope viewers will find that the scene is handled well.

An American Hero

Recently I have been reading the diary of a great American hero, Alvin York; he was the most acclaimed hero of World War I. When drafted, he tried for exemption as a conscientious objector, but was denied exemption for various reasons. York finally accepted that he must go to war, but still was not willing to kill. He had some discussion with a commanding officer who tried to convince York from Scripture that it is permissible for Christians to kill in war. York was not totally convinced, but he had serious doubts concerning his prior convictions.

York resolved to obey the authority over him, and in the heat of battle he proved himself a valiant warrior. In the battle of Argonne, many of York's division were gunned down by German machine gunners. York knew he must stop those machine guns in order to save the lives of the American forces. What followed was an astounding feat of heroics as York (virtually) single handedly captured 132 German soldiers!

You can read York's diary for yourself or watch the big screen version starring Gary Cooper. It's an amazing story worth reading!

Let Me Introduce You to My Wonderful Family

My father, Stanley, is a wise and gentle man; he is known to incessantly cling to Scripture as his foundation and guide for all areas of life, against all opposition. I always ask him for advice regarding business and theological questions. I certainly cannot deny that he has great knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures. My father is self-employed and has been for many years. He is also an Elder at our local congregation.

My mother, Brenda, has been committed to educating her sons at home for many years. She has a heart to help people that are hurting and in need. She enjoys singing and painting, though she hasn’t had time to paint for a long time. She is also patiently waiting for the day when one of her four sons will get married so that she may finally have a daughter (in-law)!

My eldest brother, Stephen (soon to be 25), is an outgoing and friendly person. He has an uncanny ability to memorize Scripture, which he has demonstrated before crowds on several occasions. His dramatic portrayals of word-for-word Scripture are a sight to behold! His dream-jobs include airline pilot and radio station DJ.

Shad (12) is known around our home as “idea man”. He dreams big ideas of things he would like to do and new ways to do them. He dreams of the day when he can own a cattle ranch and build his own log cabin out in the west. He is quite an avid baseball player with the East Pete Rec. Association; he usually pitches or plays first base. He is also learning to play guitar.

Shane (7), my youngest brother loves to sing a lot, play baseball, go bowling, and spend time with his brother Scott. He also loves to beat people at Monopoly (such as his Dad, Mom, brother Scott, and Aunt Dottie).

I am Scott, the writer of this blog. I don’t want to say much about myself here; you can read a little about me at my website Mission page.
