From Films to Broken Glass

Last Friday was the premiere of our newest film, A Defense of God’s Law. Everything went well – the projector worked fine, and people showed up!

As the film ended, the people clapped. Whether they clapped because they liked the film or because they were glad it was over, I could not tell. Here are a few pictures from the evening.

A Lifetime of Childlike Faith

The work of Leonard Knight has captured the interest of such greats as National Geographic, Ripley's Believe It or Not, and the Discovery Channel. Leonard Knight’s story is remarkable. He has done the seemingly impossible, without the benefit of electricity or running water!

John Moore, the director of Bubble Trouble, took it upon himself to tell the story of the simple man behind Salvation Mountain. John teamed up with his filmmaking partner, David Heustis to bring this story to the screen. They have produced a well-made film. They told the story in an engaging way that keeps your attention. The film is filled with cutting edge graphics and animation thanks to David’s CGI prowess. I look forward to the next film from HeuMoore Productions. Look for a sequel to Bubble Trouble, coming this fall!

A Lifetime of Childlike Faith is available from SEM Distribution.

The Cure for Procrastination

Many of us suffer from the nagging problem called procrastination. We always intend to take care of the problem...tomorrow. How can we shake this bad habit? I would like to offer a solution.

The Cause
Why is procrastination such a common problem? I think it is so easy to put things off because we take tomorrow for granted. We assume that there will always be another day to do the things we put off, so we put them off.

We put things off until tomorrow because we think tomorrow is guaranteed. The problem is we forget about a little thing called “death”. Hebrews 9:27 tells us that all people will die someday. It could be today. We are not guaranteed any tomorrows.

“This night thy soul shall be required of thee”
Jesus told a parable about a rich man that was making big plans for his future (Luke 12:16-20). Little did he know that he was about to die. God told him, “This night thy soul shall be required of thee.”

While we are young, we think we have many more years to come. But we are not guaranteed to live to old age. I know several people that have died recently which were younger than I. No place is “death-proof”, either. You can die in bed just as easily as anywhere else.

What’s the Connection?
So how do we tie this with procrastination? I believe the solution to procrastination is to recognize that today may be your last day on earth. If you realize that death could come at any moment, you won’t put off the things that simply must be done. If this truth is made real to you, you will make relationships your priority because you never know if it might be the last time you see that person. Tonight may be your night to die...or theirs.

It‘s okay to put off some work (even some relationships can be put off). You have to determine if the work absolutely must be done before you die or if the relationship with that person is essential. If so, do it ASAP. If not, then it’s okay to put it off for a little while.

If you live with this philosophy, trust me, you won’t spend half as much time in front of the television. You won’t waste as much time in organized sports. Your priorities will get straightened out and you’ll end up doing more to advance the Kingdom of God in your lifetime.

My Charge to You
Don’t leave anything unresolved. Don’t neglect that relationship. Don’t put off that phone call. You never know if it will be the last time you see that person. Don’t neglect the work that God has called you to do. Today may be your last chance. So live with a purpose, live with a mission, and make every day count for the glory of God!

Praise Where Praise is Due

Sometimes, people have trouble praising someone they don’t like. We can easily dismiss anything that person says just because that person said it. I think it’s time we move beyond that type of thinking and be quick to praise someone for the good they do, even if we regularly disagree with that person.

By now, most of my readers are probably thinking “where is he going with this?” I’m leading up to something, just be patient.

The other day I happened to be listening to Rush Limbaugh. Don’t ask me why. I normally cannot stand to listen to him because he’s not conservative enough. He’s too far on the socialist side, in my opinion.

However, yesterday was different. He gave a long monologue about the evils of feminism. I know he will be bashed in the media (and even by Christians) because of the stand he took. I want to commend him for standing up for the truth. He recognizes that feminism is degrading to women as well as men. He even sees that a woman’s God created role is to be a keeper at home. Praise where praise is due!

Mr. Limbaugh might be interested in seeing the upcoming film from the Gunn brothers, The Monstrous Regiment. Hint, hint. Mr. Gunn, are you reading this?

Film Premiere at Local Church

Lancaster, PA – Immanuel Free Reformed Church of Shoeneck will host a free public showing of the locally produced documentary, A Defense of God’s Law. The 70 minute film will be shown on Friday, May 18th at 7 pm. A Defense of God’s Law presents arguments for and against the relevance of biblical law.

A Defense of God’s Law is the first feature length documentary by Scott Eash, a local Christian filmmaker. He began work on the project when he noticed that Christians lacked a concise and understandable resource on the subject. “A lot of Christians don’t know what to think about the Law of God,” says Scott. “There are some great books that address the issue, but these are largely inaccessible to the average person. They are often difficult to understand or too thick for most Christians to grasp.” Since most people are not interested in reading a 900 page book on the Law of God, Scott decided to produce a film that would cover all angles in a relatively short amount of time. “There was a lot to cover in a mere 70 minutes,” he says, “but I think this film will be a good introductory resource that will benefit many.”

Eash began producing the film in September of 2005. The eighteen month long production schedule forced Scott to wear many hats including writer, director, producer, editor, artist, animator, and on-screen host. “I worked with a small crew,” he says, “but they all worked hard to get the job done. I’m very pleased with their work.”

Scott Eash began filmmaking at the age of 10. He made many short films including Consider God’s Creation, a nature film. A Defense of God’s Law is his first feature length documentary. DVD copies will be available at the public showing and at Christian retailers across the country and on the web.

Immanuel Free Reformed Church is located at the crossroads in the old Shoeneck fire hall. For more info about the film, visit the film's webpage. Tickets are not required, but come early to get a good seat.

Let's Make a Movie!

What do filmmakers do on their day off? They make films of course! On Monday, I had the pleasure of spending the day with friends to make a western for fun. Special thanks to the Herr family for lending their talent to this film!

I planned an overall story for the film ahead of time, but each scene was planned on the spot, just before filming. The dialog was mostly spontaneous.

There was no lighting set up or boom mic. We didn’t intend to make this film professional. It was solely for the benefit of friends having fun together.

Our goal was to shoot the entire film in one day. Though we didn’t quite make that goal, we were pretty close. Enjoy the pictures!
