Crosswalk, the SAICFF...and Prince Caspian!

Today, Crosswalk.com posted an interview with Doug Phillips. Topics covered include, the SAICFF, Hollywood, careful casting, and "imitation" Christian films.

After you read the article, please come back here and tell me what you think of Mr. Phillips' comments about the Prince Caspian movie. I'll withhold my opinion until after I have heard from you folks.

What he said about Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader is absolutely true! Like most people, I too was very excited when I heard the Chronicles of Narnia books were going to be made into films. When the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe came out I was disappointed with their lack of loyalty to the book. And now, the more I read and hear about Prince Caspian, the more and more disappointed I am.

I totally agree with what Mr. Phillips said. We (Christians) dropped our guard against Hollywood when they released the first Narnian Chronicle. Now that our guard is down, they will drag things in that Christians would have protested before, but now I don't think you'll hear too many complaints.

Well I'm not much of a Narnia fan myself anyway. I haven't read the books and don't know much of the story of Caspien. I for one haven't seen the kind of things that Mr. Phillips was talking about in the trailers and such. Could you elaborate a bit more on what is causing the concern?

I mean I know they say it will be darker, and sure I've seen more night scenes - darker :), battles, and drama in PC of LWW. But I don't see how he's drawing in rebellion and occult.

I wonder the same thing as John-Clay - there are lots of rumors going around about what is and isn't in Prince Caspian, but very few people have seen the movie - how does he know this? I suppose it is possible for him to have seen a preview of PC - I will give him that. However, Voyage of the Dawn Treader is in early pre-production, and from what I know they haven't even finished the script yet. Also, if one reads the book, Prince Caspian is darker and more intense story than LWW is, so it just makes sense for the movie to be more intense. If he is referring to the magic and such that was not in LWW and is in PC, well the later books did have more magic than LWW did.

I agree with John-clay and Matthew. Has Mr. Phillips seen the movie? And what does he mean by rebellion and occult?

To answer your questions, John-Clay, I'll have to address something Matthew brought up. How does Mr. Phillips know this inside info? Considering that Vision Forum made a CD that condemns gossip, I don't think Mr. Phillips is spreading rumors.

First of all, Mr. Phillips was in attendance at the NRB Convention, which featured lectures by Disney execs, a PC trailer, and a pre-viz trailer for Voyage of the Dawn Treader. So it's quite likely that Mr. Phillips is privy to information that most of us are not. Secondly, I believe there are enough clues in the trailers that hint at the teenage rebellion and occultism that Mr. Phillips mentioned.

Rebellion:
From all appearances, Susan is a warrior alongside the men. If things are actually how they appear in the trailer and behind the scenes clips, this would be rebellion against God's design for men to be protectors of women. Has anyone else noticed that PC also stands for "politically correct"?

Occultism:
Perhaps Mr. Phillips is referring to the occultism that is in the original books.

As for the film being darker, director Andrew Adamson is quoted as saying that this story "...is gritty and darker."

Ok, well I guess I could see the point about Susan assisting with the Narnia wars.

I'm not sure that the PC/"politically correct" connection has anything to do with each other. Seems coincidence to me. :) I mean they call call movies by their abbreviations all the time - ROTJ (return of the jedi) LOTR (Lord of the Rings) I fail to see how PC (Prince Caspien) is bringing in Politically Correct.

Just because the director says that the film will be gritty and darker...I would hold my condescending comments of the film until I saw the film and new what he meant. Gritty and Dark can be interpreted many different ways.

Disclaimer: I honestly have no bias on the Narnia series, I am not a fan, it is just that I like to see substantial evidence for critical remarks. :) And evidence seems pretty weak to me right now, considering how strongly Mr. Phillips spoke out against the films.

I realize that PC is an abbreviation for Prince Caspian. I also realize that the "woman warrior" is a politically correct idea. The "PC" seems to fit.

You're absolutely right that "gritty and darker" could be interpreted several different ways. It's probably wise to withhold any comments in that regard until we see the film.

In Mr. Phillips' defense, I should remind you that he is privy to information that we are not (see my comment above).
