Casting update for The Lone Ranger

I earlier reported that Jerry Bruickheimer is making a new big-screen version of The Lone Ranger. While it remains to be seen if the movie will be any good, and a release date is not set, I have some interesting news to share...

I have recently confirmed that Johnny Depp has been signed to play Tonto, the Lone Ranger's trusty sidekick. For those who don't know, Johnny Depp was the star of all three (soon to be four) Pirates of the Caribbean movies (which I have not seen).

It was once said that two classic film genres were dead - pirate movies and westerns. Mr. Bruickheimer has already revived the pirate movie genre. Will he do the same for westerns? Or will John Moore beat him to it with The Widow's Might?
