Big Filmmaking Mistake to Avoid, Part 1

Every Christian filmmaker has a multitude of mistakes to avoid. Several years ago, Geoff Botkin recorded a helpful lecture titled, “The Twelve Most Common Mistakes of Beginning Directors”. Some mistakes to avoid include bad theology, poor story structure, and sloppy production values. Bottom line – if you’re a filmmaker, get the CD. Period.

By God’s grace, there are many resources to help filmmakers excel in actually producing actual movies. Just to start, I will highly recommend The Christian Filmmaker’s Academy, Outside Hollywood, and ChristianFilmmakers.org. If you want to make movies, you can learn just about everything you need to know about the production process by drawing from those resources.

But there’s one problem that hasn’t been adequately addressed.

There’s one problem that makes my top ten list of mistakes to avoid. And most filmmakers neglect to think about this one problem until it’s too late. What am I talking about?

One word. Distribution.

Why do so many Christian filmmakers never breakeven, much less turn a profit? Why do most Christian filmmakers wait until the movie is finished before they try to set up distribution connections? Do we still need traditional movie distributors? Is it true that independent filmmakers can market their movies without any help from a distributor?

Over the next few weeks (or perhaps many weeks), I’ll be tackling these questions head-on and dispelling some myths. Let’s dig deep into the nitty gritty of independent film distribution and clear up the mystery of the process. Find out how the system worked in the past, why it’s not working now, and what we intend to do about it.

Stick around. This could be fun!

SAICFF to award largest cash prize in the world!

Today, Vision Forum unveiled a big announcement about the 2009 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival...the top winner will receive a cash award in the amount of $101,000! View a promo video here.

Excerpts from the press release:

Thanks to the generous donation of a private foundation, the cash prize payout for their annual "Best of Festival" Jubilee Award is being upped to more than $101,000, giving it the top rank for cash prizes among film festivals worldwide. In addition, it is expected that other cash, product and service related prizes will bring the total value of awards for the next SAICFF in excess of $200,000...

Phillips noted, "We at the SAICFF are endeavoring to spearhead this reformation by giving the largest cash prize award in the world to our 'Best of Festival' Winner—to reward that filmmaker who best communicates a Christian worldview with artistic excellence through their work. Because a private foundation has chosen to invest, the future of Christian film making in America, the SAICFF is able to offer independant Christian film makers a signifigant incentive."

"Our mission is not to infiltrate Hollywood, nor merely to temper its distasteful agenda," Phillips said, "but to replace it altogether. We are about the business of building a replacement industry—one that is distinctively Christian in message and methodology. This world class grand prize sends a message that Christians are serious about investing in those independent Christian filmmakers who are willing to work outside of Hollywood, and to produce competitive films of technical excellence, with a presuppositionally biblical message."

The Battle for Civilization

Geoff Botkin is producing a seven-part TV documentary series that may prove to be THE most important documentary in American history. If you know anything about Mr. Botkin, you know that's probably an understatement.

This film is now in production.

From The Battle for Civilization website...
The Battle for Civilization is an ambitious seven-part television series. It represents a fresh and creative look at the little-known turning points in world culture that led to periods temporary civilization. The content will help viewers apply some very practical knowledge to the challenges of the 21st century.

The series will give average American men the intellectual tools they need to face the disintegrating disciplines of economics, science, history, art, politics and religion.

...One of the best kept secrets of history reveals that any culture, even the most pagan and violent, can actually be rebuilt into orderly, superior civil society.

This knowledge must be recovered as America stumbles weakly into the 21st century. There is no reason for American men to be confused about the past and uncertain about the future. The Battle for Civilization goes boldly behind the battle lines of history’s most important culture wars. Few historians have ever explained the issues at stake in the seven pivotal events of the last 2000 years. This program carefully points out the unique connections that have driven history forward and upward.

Pendragon Movie Production Continues

This weekend, Burns Family Studios is shooting more scenes of Pendragon: Sword of His Father. They will be wrapping up production sometime this spring and they're hoping for a fall 2008 DVD release.

For those who haven't heard about this movie, you must check it out. It is one of the most ambitious independent Christian movies ever produced...ever! It may be the first low-budget Christian epic. Swords, catapults, Saxons, battles, and (we hope) a good story. Keep looking for Pendragon: Sword of His Father!

One of my friends is helping with the shoot this weekend. His name is John-Clay Burnett and he is one of the cameramen on this shoot. Some of you may know him as the director of Joel's Journey and the Sanctity of Life.
